Palacio de Congresos de Albacete

The city of Albacete is the urban centre with the greatest number of inhabitants in Castilla-La Mancha(over 170,000 inhabitants) and one of the twenty most-populated conurbations in the country. It is located within the province in the district of Los Llanos which shares its name. This locations, que constitutes one of its main geographical advantages, has allowed it to relate to the rest of the Spanish cities and regions, making it a communications hub both of the rail network , and of a modern motorway network, and, moreover, it has a splendid airport; all that has contributed to the open disposition and to the welcoming character of its people.

History

Historically Albacete (Al–Basit as the Arabs called it) was a village, which began to be important in its own right in the last episodes of the medieval period, in the first quarter of the 14th Century, the Fair began which soon attracted traders, merchants and livestock dealers from nearby areas, which caused in 1375 the first marquess of Villena to grant it the status of village. it underwent important growth during the 15th-16th centuries, and at the beginning of the 17th century (the year 1710) it received the privilege of organising an annual fair, which would make this village the greatest economic centre in the districtand in 1783 the fairground was inauguratedthe only one in Spain with that purpose. In 1833, Albacete became a provincial capital. In the first decades of the 19th century, it enjoyed a period of splendour; with the economic drive, it could carry out important urban reforms, construct numerous buildings and become a beautiful modern city , withbroad streets and a well-tended urban appearanceCommerce and a budding industry were substantially developed, making Albacete a first-rate central place. In 1862 it obtained the title of city at the hands of Isabel II. Currently, Albacete is a comfortable city, where there are no distances, and which enjoys numerous and well-tended green spaces. A city which aspires to consolidateits position in the regional urban network and to improve its function as a first-rate service centre. The location of the Upper Court of Justice of Castilla-La Mancha and of the University Campus dedicated to health sciences, technical teaching, humanities and social sciences, pursues this purpose. Provided with splendid commercial equipment and a high cultural level, it is a modern, active city of the future, as demonstrated by its many projects, some of which have today been put into practice, such as the Conference Centre, the Science and Technology Park, the Botanic Garden or the AVE. To discover the province there is nothing better than organising the visit taking as the starting point some of the well-maintained hotel or rural tourism accommodation and from there, spending a few days enjoying its cuisineactive tourism and at the same time touring the capital and the province.
